WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY, 18-19 MARCH_UNIT 14_GRAMMAR

 UNIT 14

Today I would like you to focus on Grammar.

 Study this grammar point.

Once you have read the theoretical explanation, I would like you to write a short story containing some of the verbs.

You can write a short story for homework and send it to me
by email.
Make sure you use a reasonable range of verb patterns.

Verbs followed by –ing

I enjoy reading. (not I enjoy to read)

Would you mind closing the door? (not mind to close)

Chris suggested going to the cinema. (not suggested to go)

She recommended watching the film.

After enjoy, mind, suggest and recommend we use -ing
(not to ... ).

Some more verbs that are followed by -ing:

stop    finish     admit   deny   consider

avoid     risk    imagine     fancy
·      Suddenly everybody stopped talking. There was silence.
·      I'll do the shopping when I've finished cleaning the flat.
·      He tried to avoid answering my question.
·      Would you mind closing the door?
·      I don't fancy going out this evening. (= I'm not enthusiastic about it)
·      Have you ever considered going to live in another country?
·      They said they were innocent. They denied doing anything wrong.

After these verbs you can use
to ...(infinitive):

Practise using these verbs in different contexts.

offer   agree    refuse    decide    plan   arrange manage    fail    deserve     afford     forget     promise       threaten       learn

lt was late, so we decided to take a taxi home.

These verbs are followed by to .. . (infinitive).
The structure can be: verb+ to ...

He doesn't want to know.
 Do not say 'want that:

verb + object + to ...

My teacher asked me to write an informal email yesterday
